Worth knowing
- Greensboro collects bulk trash every other week, on recycling day, curbside by 7 a.m.
- City crews will not collect items over 50 pounds or appliances; appliances need a call to 336-373-2489.
- Interior designers in the Greensboro-High Point metro averaged $29.69 an hour in May 2025.
Much of what makes a house look ready for buyers costs little or nothing. Greensboro sellers also get bulk trash pickup on a regular schedule rather than only by appointment. Below, staging work is sorted into three tiers by cost, with the sources for each number.

Tier one: free
The work agents recommend most often is free. In the National Association of REALTORS® 2025 Profile of Home Staging, sellers’ agents most commonly recommended decluttering the home (91 percent), cleaning the entire home (88 percent) and improving curb appeal (77 percent). Fifty-one percent of sellers’ agents said they did not stage homes at all but suggested that sellers declutter or fix property faults.
- Remove a third of what sits on shelves and counters.
- Take down most family photos and personal collections.
- Rearrange furniture so each room has a clear walking path.
- Open blinds and turn on every lamp before showings.
- Clean windows, baseboards and light fixtures.
Getting the clutter out, the Greensboro way
The City of Greensboro picks up bulk trash every other week on the same day as recycling, and items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. Accepted items include furniture, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, chairs, bikes, doors, rolled carpet and lawn mowers drained of gas and oil. That makes the free tier genuinely free for most of what comes out of a house during decluttering.
The city lists the reasons items get left behind, which doubles as a checklist:
| Left at the curb because | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Extra bags of trash are not bulk | Fit them in the green cart, or buy an additional container by calling 336-373-CITY (2489) |
| It weighs more than 50 pounds | Follow the city’s 2-2-2 rule: never too big for two people to handle |
| It is an appliance | Call 336-373-2489 to schedule appliance pickup |
| It is a TV or computer | Take it to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center |
| It is construction debris | Bag it into the green cart or a 32-gallon container, or ask the city for a priced pickup |
| Carpet is loose | Roll and tie it in bundles no longer than five feet |
| It is cardboard | Break it down and put it in the brown recycling container |
Because pickup is every other week, start decluttering at least a month before the listing date so you get two bulk collections before the photographer arrives.
Tier two: low cost
This tier is the shopping list: a new doormat, fresh towels, neutral bedding, a few plants, light bulbs of one color temperature and a can of touch-up paint. It also covers the front beds. N.C. Cooperative Extension in Lee County notes that longleaf pine needles are the most prized for pine needle mulch, that North Carolina has a large industry producing it, and that a 40-pound bale typically covers about 100 square feet to a 2-inch depth. For a small front bed, that is often one or two bales.
Tier three: hiring help
The professional tier is where costs vary most. Nationally, the median amount spent on a staging service was $1,500, compared with $500 when the agent staged the home personally, according to the NAR survey. Sellers’ agents who hired a staging company typically collected two bids and cared most about the quality of design (63 percent) and price (51 percent).
Wages for related trades in the Greensboro-High Point metro, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for May 2025, were lower than in the state’s other large metros for most occupations:
| Occupation (Greensboro-High Point, May 2025) | Mean hourly | North Carolina mean |
|---|---|---|
| Interior designers | $29.69 | $31.86 |
| Carpenters | $24.25 | $24.28 |
| Painters, construction and maintenance | $20.68 | $21.59 |
| Landscaping and groundskeeping workers | $18.60 | $19.04 |
| Hand laborers and material movers | $18.80 | $18.94 |
Wages are not prices, but lower local wages usually show up in lower labor quotes. If you were going to hire one task out, painting or yard cleanup tends to change listing photos the most.
When to stage in Greensboro
NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Piedmont Triad International Airport show average highs of 71.0 °F in both April and October, against 88.5 °F in July. Our Curb Appeal for North Carolina Home Sellers: Lawn, Beds and Timing That Fit the Piedmont guide covers yard timing in more detail.
Rain matters for any outdoor part of the plan. At Piedmont Triad International, September is the wettest month in NOAA’s normals, at 4.59 inches, while October averages only 4.7 days with a tenth of an inch of rain or more, the fewest of any month. That makes early October a reliable window for mulching, washing the porch and taking exterior photos.
Most Greensboro sellers can get through tiers one and two for a modest outlay and decide later whether tier three is needed.
