Worth knowing
- Raleigh charges $35 per Bulky Load pickup (from April 1, 2026) and $70 per Special Load.
- A Bulky Load is four cubic yards, about two couches or three queen mattresses.
- Interior designers in the Raleigh-Cary metro averaged $33.11 an hour in May 2025.
Raleigh is one of the few places where part of the staging budget is printed on a city web page. The rest you have to assemble from quotes. The fastest way to do that is to work through a short set of questions in order. Each answer either removes a cost or tells you who to call.

Question 1: Is the house occupied or empty?
This matters more than square footage. In an occupied home you are mostly editing what is already there: removing extra furniture, clearing counters and adding a few fresh accessories. In a vacant home, buyers see bare rooms unless someone brings furniture in. the National Association of REALTORS® 2025 Profile of Home Staging found that the median spend with a staging service was $1,500, compared with $500 when the listing agent staged the home personally. Full rental packages for empty houses are the reason the service figure is higher.
Question 2: Which rooms actually need work?
Staging every room is rarely necessary. In the same survey, buyers’ agents rated the living room as the most important room to stage (37 percent said very important), followed by the primary bedroom (34 percent) and the kitchen (23 percent). The guest bedroom came last, at 7 percent. Sellers’ agents said the rooms they most often staged were the living room (91 percent), the primary bedroom (83 percent) and the dining room (69 percent).
Key takeaways
- Spend first on the living room, primary bedroom and kitchen.
- Guest rooms and children’s rooms can often be simply cleared and cleaned.
- Outdoor space ranked in the middle for buyers’ agents: worth tidying, rarely worth furnishing.
Question 3: What will hauling cost?
Most Raleigh staging projects start with getting things out of the house. The City of Raleigh offers fee-based pickups for residents who receive curbside garbage service, scheduled by calling Solid Waste Services Customer Support at 919-996-3245. The charge appears on your next utility bill.
| City of Raleigh service | What it takes | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Bulky Load | Furniture, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, area rugs and similar household items; up to four cubic yards (six feet long, three feet wide, four feet high) | $35 per load from April 1, 2026, no limit on loads |
| Special Load | Appliances, large exercise equipment, excess garbage bags (up to 24 per load) and excess yard waste | $70 per load |
| E-waste | TVs, monitors, microwaves, lamps, vacuums and other corded items | Free, up to four items per week |
Loads are charged in full increments; partial loads are not prorated. To get a refund you must cancel before noon on the business day before collection. The city also warns that items placed at the curb before scheduling are subject to fines under the City Code, and that it never collects remodeling debris such as old toilets, sinks, mirrors, cabinets, countertops or carpeting. If your pre-listing work includes swapping a vanity or tearing up carpet, budget for a private hauler or a trip to a Wake County facility.
Tip: Raleigh’s e-waste pickup moves from Tuesdays to Mondays on October 26, 2026. Check the current day before you set out an old TV.
Question 4: What does local labor cost?
If you hire help by the hour, Bureau of Labor Statistics data for the Raleigh-Cary metro gives a sense of local wages in May 2025. Businesses charge more than these wages because they cover overhead and insurance, so use the figures to compare trades, not as a price list.
| Occupation (Raleigh-Cary, May 2025) | Mean hourly | Median hourly |
|---|---|---|
| Interior designers | $33.11 | $31.00 |
| Carpenters | $24.74 | $24.43 |
| Painters, construction and maintenance | $22.11 | $21.81 |
| Landscaping and groundskeeping workers | $19.86 | $18.51 |
| Hand laborers and material movers | $19.44 | $18.50 |
Question 5: Will it be worth it?
No survey can promise a return on your house. What NAR’s agents reported is mixed but useful: 19 percent of sellers’ agents saw an increase of one to five percent in the dollar value offered compared with similar homes, 30 percent saw no impact and 34 percent were not sure. Thirty percent said staging slightly reduced time on the market and 19 percent said it greatly reduced it. We look at those numbers more closely in Does Home Staging Pay Off? What Agents Report, and How Staging Costs Fit Into Your Taxes.
Timing a Raleigh listing
NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Raleigh-Durham International Airport show why spring and fall are popular for outdoor prep. April averages a high of 72.7 °F and October 73.0 °F, while July reaches 90.8 °F. September is the wettest month, with 5.15 inches of rain, and July is close behind at 5.02 inches. If your plan includes fresh mulch, new sod or exterior touch-ups, leave a cushion in the schedule for rain.
